A while ago I posted a message asking for advice on how to deal with HP/UX Oracle servers attached to PC-base Oracle clients (actually Powerbuilder) using SQL*NET and TCP/IP. If the PC crashes, or rebooted, Oracle still sees a connection until the TCP/IP keepalive timers expire and the connection is dropped. That typically takes 2 hours, during which time any outstanding locks held by the PC client remain in effect.

The consensus of the replies is that's the state of client server technology for now until the client/server apps build in some handshaking of their own. There were however some people who had developed home-grown ways of dealing with the server processes. I've unfortunately lost the replies and would appreciate hearing from those people who have dealt with the problem. Thanks in advance for the help. Received on Thu Sep 23 1993 - 12:41:25 CEST
