Help me choose a database

Hello.
I am cross-posting this message across all the comp.databases.* newsgroups iin an attempt to get as much info as possible from people who specialize or are very familiar with one or more database packages.
I am in the proccess of designing a real-time system under MS-DOS. I need a database that will either have a library that can interface with C or a more 'application generator' type database that will allow interupst to be recived and handled.
From the adds I have read, packages like CodeBase 5.0 seem much more practical then something like FoxPro - simply due to it's flexibilty and, since it is a library - it won't hog all my resources.
I hesitate to use the phrase client/server as that isn't quite the case here, but there is communication between many databases on many machines, with a main file server.
I need something that is going to be REALLY fault tolerant, that will be able to recover from a crash with minimal data loss and no corruption. It needs to be able to deal with over a 3 million records, and must be as fast as possible ( obviously :-) ).
While I am sure y'all must get posts like this a zillion times a month, I would really appreciate if you could all share some of your experience with me. In return, I will post back a tabularized version of all the info I get, so maybe this won't happen too often.
If you could please reply by e-mail, as I don't read the news often.
