PRO* variable equivalencing

We've finally got a precompiler manual for version 1.4, despite the fact that we've been using it for several months.

There doesn't seem to be a great deal changed, except for the addition of datatype equivalencing.

This seems very badly explained, and not particularly portable (eg. the manual implies that array types need to have the size mentioned at least twice).

Am I missing something? Can someone give me a real example of their use?

I have started using the STRING type, to get null-terminated strings (I'm using C), which makes things more pleasant, but is there anyway to avoid having to define the length twice?
