Sounds reasonable.

When I used to work at the "big O" we followed this procedure to back up the raw partitions via cron at night:

-kick off the users
-alter tablespaces begin backup
-dd the partitions to files on disk
-alter tablespaces end backup
-let 'em back on

Since backing up files was on "operations" turf that was the end of it from our point of view. The nightly backup script was the mechanism which actually put the partition backups on tape. Once in awhile we would test them to see if they could restore our files.

This strategy has holes but it's quick.
Also, you need a boat load of disk drives, but if you're the "big O" hardware companies just give 'em to you. If you're AT&T just buy some.
