named pipe for install

I'm trying to run an Oracle installation from a remote tape drive.
The install program looks for a local device (eg. /dev/rst0) to read from.
I've been told the way to go is with a named pipe. (If there's a better/easier way to do it, I'd gladly accept that :-)
Can someone please help me with setting up and using a named pipe.
