BLOBs and their use

Currently, most major vendors have some sort of Large Object (LOB) or Binary Large Object (BLOB) support in their RDBMS products.

Also currently, most LOB support is still undeveloped. For instance, does anyone offer the ability to manipulate parts of BLOBs at the SQL level?

I guess my real questions are about the use of BLOBs today. What do people use them for? Text storage? Binary data storage? Other things? How do people use them? What do people wish they could do with BLOBs that they cannot do? What can they do that they find invaluable?

I am interested in finding out what database customers do and would like to do. If you send me your comments, I will summarize to the net.
