Rumor has had it for as long as we've been involved with MVS that Oracle is a real resources hog. We have version 6 but our use of it is so slight that we have no good feel for the accuracy of this "rumor." We are looking at converting our student information system (vsam) to an RDBMS and the initial presumption was that we would purchase (or lease) and use DB2. (Looking at license costs for both products would tend to rule out DB2!) We've likewise heard that DB2 requires all sorts of third party products to make a workable system. Developing this application in Oracle would also seem to be a great way to prepare for "rightsizing" to another hardware platform while DB2 would likely limit that choice.

What experience(s) have others had with Oracle under MVS?
