Thanks to all who responded to my post requesting information about generating code from the Oracle*CASE tool.
The vast majority of respondents indicated the code generators were capable of producing very substantial forms and reports, if the CASE repository had been well populated. A number that came up frequently was that the generated applications were "90% complete" - that an experienced Oracle application developer was needed to finish up the remaining 10%.
Which leads to the second point - is it worth the trouble of genning only 90% of an application? The answer from all but one respondent was very definitely "yes". The time savings achieved by letting the generators do so much work is apparently substantial.
One respondent indicated he was able to code the application in about the same length of time (and better) than going through the CASE tool. He provided the caveat that it was his organization's first experience with the CASE tool, so there may have been things they could have done differently to get better results. Either that or he's just a pretty hot Oracle programmer ;-)
One unique example was provided - generating Smalltalk code from the CASE tool! This is not a standard code-generation from Oracle*CASE and did require some modifications to the datadictionary and a bit of other gymnastics, but it is an intruiging effort.
Overall, the accumulated anecdotal evidence is that generating Oracle apps from the Oracle*CASE tool is a worthwhile thing to do.
I have saved the responses to my posting and will be happy to forward any information on request. Thanks to all who responded here and by mail - it is the *people* who make the InterNet a marvelous thing.
