Hi,
I need some advise in selecting a database in a networked environment consisting of PCs and Macs. Before I proceed any further, let me give you the details of the type of environment I work in.
Computers: PCs and Macs
Network: The PCs and MACs are integrated using PATHWORKS (Digital)
on a microvax, providing a common area for both the Macs & PCs
Current database: Foxbase + on the MAC and PC
Requirement Criteria:
To have a database with file sharing capabilities providing locking at the record level. Let me explain in more detail. We are trying to keep a database of all our work in progress allowing multiple users to access the same file(simultaneously) With a conventional database, when I use a file , other users are locked out of that database. The way I would desire it to be is to be able to view/update other records in the SAME database and NOT update records currently being viewed or being updated by other users on the network ie. provide locking at the record level and not at the file level. It'll be great if the database program has versions on both the MAC and PC so that file may be exchanged between platforms. I know it's a big request but I can probably live without a db on the mac. We currently have Foxbase on the MAC and PC, but I believe that foxbase provides a file level locking, and does not serve our purpose.
Any help would be truly/greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all those who reply or give it a thought.
