Not true. You can make backups of raw devices by taking an image copy of the raw device. In Unix, that means using the dd command. I have done this a number of times on Pyramid, AT&T Starservers and NCR 3445s. The standard Unix backup script will not work, nor will cpio. But using dd out to tape works fine.
