Here's what I learned, both from the net and from Oracle. Note that I only received half a dozen responses, so this information should not be taken as a reasonable sample (or maybe it should ...).
Oracle 7 is not available in a production version yet, but is expected to be by the end of 1992.
The migrations I heard about were fairly trivial, consisting of a single application, a small database, or test data. They took from one hour to one day.
The estimates for "real" migration were one man-week to one man-month.
Based on these replies and the Oracle 7 Migration Guide, it seems that you can 'migrate', or you can '*migrate*'. The first form of migration does not include taking advantage of any version 7 features, such as triggers, stored procedures, etc. The second form does.
My impression is that the first form of migration is pretty simple, probably taking a few days for huge systems. The second form, done thoroughly, could require redesigning large segments of the databases and applications, thus it could become a long-term project.
Obviously, there is a lot of room in between the two extremes. I suspect that most sites will want to start with the simple migration, and upgrade the databases and applications to take advantage of version 7 as schedules permit or requirements demand.
One other comment I received is that Oracle support for version 6 will end at the end of 1993. I have not confirmed the statement, but I find it easy to believe.
