Has anybody got Oracle Card for Windows V1.0 to coexist with Digital's Pathworks? Actually got it to connect to a remote database, not just install and load?
When you specify the user, password, and connect string, you get Oracle error 3121 (communication error). After talking with Oracle support about a half dozen times now, it doesn't appear good, and Oracle Card for Windows was rated one of the top ten apps of 91 by PCMag, so it would be nice if it worked with Pathworks. This DOES work fine: starting Pathworks (with or w/o EMS), SQLDNT (real mode), and then connecting to a remote server with SQLPLUS (non windows based) from the Tools kit. But from within enhanced mode Windows, Oracle card can't talk to the real mode SQLDNT, hence the connect failure. SQLDNT was run before starting Windows or after (Program Manager File, Run) and made no difference. Interestingly, from within Windows, running the same exact SQLPLUS command that connected fine outside of Windows now gives the same Error 3121.
The Oracle Card release notes say that SQLDNT must be used in real mode with Enhanced Windows, and if Windows must be used in Standard mode with Protected mode SQLDNT. The Protected mode (SQLPME, then SQLDNT; PBIN entry first in PATH) fails with other memory managers present, so EMM386 can't be used, which severely limits memory, and by the time Pathworks is in RAM (bare minumum needed for file service connect), SQLDNT, and Win is started in Standard mode, then Oracle Card pops up a window declaring its out of memory. Standard mode Windows won't cut it anyhow, but it doesn't appear to work either.
Nitty gritty:
Hardware: DECstation (nee Tandy) 325c or 316sx, 4Mb, 52Mb IDE, Paradise VGA,
DE200 at C800/32k mode, 101.
Software: DOS 5 Upgrade, Windows 3.00a, Oracle SQL*net DECnet V1.1, Oracle
SQLPLUS from Oracle Tools V5.1C, Pathworks V4.0, WIN3SETU'ped.
Configuration: (Windows is installed on the network, with both client and server "portions" on file services. The only changes made from the standard Windows SETUP are "EMMExclude=c800-cfff" and "PagingDrive=C" lines added to each clients' SYSTEM.INI. Pathworks NETSETUP is not using XMS, and when EMS is chosen and used with EMM386, only DNP is loaded, and only DNP is in EMS.
