I agree with you - if you simply want to get things done, and you want to get things done simply.

But the modern developer needs a much more vibrant environment. Colors to show a word is a keyword, a variable, a constant, a line. Automatically completing the string based on context. A mouse to move the cursor. And buttons and pictures and menus - oh my.

For the modern developer, I suggest that JDeveloper from Oracle (It used to be free, includes all the TOAD functioanlity and more, only glitch - it's Java) or the Borland Delphi counterpart for Linux (name escapes me right now). And of course, there are other commercial developer IDEs, including one from SUN that I used a few years ago. I thing a google on "Linux development IDE" might yield something.
