jean-denis,
SAP R3 is a large system composed of multiple modules from Human Resources, Production, Sales, Finance (GL), Material Management and more. The product will run on OpenVMS, MPE/iX, Windows NT and possibly other by now. It can be configured to use Informix, Oracle, Software AG or Sybase. The frontend product will run on Windows, OSF/Motif, OS2PM and the Macintosh (and possibly others as well by now).
Connection to the system can be via, TCP/IP, RPC, CPI-C, ODBC, OLE/DDE, X.400/X.500, MAPI and other open interfaces to provide access to specialized applications.
The current incarnation I have used was a very thick client which place extreme demands on the network and could print only to tcp/ip enabled printers. While printer was somewhat possible using a locally attached printer, large jobs tended to fail on a very frequent basis.
The product is quite flexible but hiring the "expertise" to implement and modify the system was extremely expensive. Changes made to the system took considerable time to accomplish (this may have been due to the contractor or the system we are not sure which). The tables used the system grew at a geometrical rate in our environment and we found ourselves running of space very quickly. This was well beyound what the contractor estimated for a three year implementation. Inside of 8 months we were out of space.
A recent article in one of the computer journals (I don't remember which one) stated that SAP was losing favour with Oracle due to competition with Oracle Applications suite. I have been unable to confirm this but might be something you want to check into further if you are planning on an Oracle back end implementation.
