[Quoted] During the installation of your developer products, SQLnet 2.x should have been installed. Click on start, programs, Oracle for Win95 and you should see the SQLnet easy config icon. If not, load it from your installation CD. When you insert the CD, setup will be automatically invoked (unless you have disabled this). Choose a custom installation and select the SQLnet products only. I am assuming you have installed the rest of the products.

When the installation is complete exit the installer and you will see the SQLnet easy configuration Icon. Start this program and choose to create a new database alias and click the OK button. Enter whatever you would like to use as the alias name, say Ora8 or something. Choose the protocol you want to use. If you are not going to connect to any other server anywhere else choose named pipes. Enter the name of your machine that was assigned when networking was installed and the name of the oracle instance you want to connect to. The instance on PO8 is usually ORCL unless you created a custom database of your own. If you are uncertain as to what your machine name is, click on start, settings, control panel, networking, and click on the identification tab.

If networking has not been installed, obtain a network card if you don't already have one then install the Microsoft client. Restart the SQLnet configuration and you're done.

If you do not know how to install networking, contact your hardware vendor or a local friend to assist.
