To add to all that (or did I miss it in the storm of advise, to which I can only agree):
Designer V1.x is rule based - IF you have analyzed your tables, DROP STATISTICS!!!
I've seen CASE and Des2K operations gone from 10-20 minutes back to seconds!
Designer V2.x is cost based - estimate or compute statistics, using the RAU. It will
only analyse the Designer Tables. Do it on a regular basis.
