Auto-Display with LOV in Developer 2000

It works great, however, when defining a post-query trigger that populates that field(because we are displaying name instead of id), it displays the lov. Is there any way through the SET_LOV_PROPERTY built-in(or any built-in) to set this property false on a post-query and true on a when new item instance trigger? It shows the auto-refresh and positions but I can't find where the auto-display is included in the built-in. If I can't use the built-in, is there any suggestions as to how to automatically pop up the lov only when that field is navigated to and has no value in it? We are new to Developer 2000 so any suggestions would be appreciated.
