I agree with you on a few points.
However, Oracle has been a MARKETING organisation lucky enough to have had a GOOD PRODUCT to sell for some years. Where they went further down the road is in
a. OCM (the Lifetime Support Policy was introduced at around the same time and is it a coincidence that Extended Support actually tracks the Version to the Year, and the only way Oracle can get your currently running Versions is if they were to collect that information themselves !)
b. MOS. MOS has been a case of "we don't want to listen to our customers". Period.
