I couldn't help remembering this one colleague who used to explain he 'd closely monitor his databases, just to be proactive. But then, from time to time, feeling the need for a little heroism, he 'd find out what had to be done to avoid the uncoming trouble, and wouldn't do it. He 'd just let things go wrong, and when they 'd gone wrong, he 'd impress everybody with his instantaneous correct response. He said it was just the overly necesarry PR the DBA role needed...

Never seen him doing it, though, so I can't tell you whether it worked.
