How much real memory does the server have? What memory settings have you used for each database instance? Where do your applications run?
What type of applications are these databases supporting? Any applications other than databases and normal OS processes running on the server?

Have the administrator take a look at the sar data history. This should help determine if this was a one time issue caused by something running or if you have had a trend where spare capacity was declining.
