I think you have people confused because the "usual restore and recover" doesn't mean destroying the online logs. So that's why people are asking if you are cloning. It's sounds to me like you are cloning, except back into the same place. So Michael's pointer to the docs ought to be correct. I think to finish John's suggestion, you would need to apply the redo as though it were archived, unless you are restoring a cold backup.
