ORA-01031 insufficient privileges

Hello people,

Just made a fresh Ora10 install, and i get the dreaded ora-01031 insufficient privileges
when i try a connect / as sysdba or a connect sys/change_on_install as sysdba from the console. Haven't had this one before when installing a 10.

i checked the permissions of the oracle user:

id
uid=501(oracle) gid=501(oracle) groups=501(oracle)

echo $ORACLE_HOME
/home/oracle/product/10.2.0

echo $ORACLE_SID
production2

the softlink $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initproduction2.ora has user and group oracle , as has the file it points to.

i changed the remote_password_file from exclusive to none.

What should i check?
