Hello all

really Oracle Spatial and ArcSDE are very differents products.. so:
-ArcSDE gives some functionality (Versions or log transactions,
multiuser editing, historic db,....) to their clients (Basically ArcGIS Destktop, ArcGIS Server and any ArcObjects development, but also some paid develoments from Microstation, Haestad - for AutoCAD ,...or indeed any open source - uDIG, but only read connection ). So, without ArcGIS or any client you will really have nothing.

In the other hand, Oracle Spatial is a full GIS (with all , basic and adavanced functionallity...) but... it has not any developed client so exploit ALL this func. As Oracle Spatial is SQL 1.1.1 OGC you can use SDO_GEOMETRY with a lot of clients (from ArcSDE/ArcGIS to gvSIG, uDIG or indeed GRASS).

So , really, the comparisión (if you're thinking from the user side) should be between ArcSDE plus. any of its cilent and Oracle Spatial and any custom develompent
