You can specify an additional parameter:

opatch apply -jdk <location of your JDK>

We never had a problem with IBM's JDK 1.4.

Does it hang even with the above workaround?

Then I'd definitely open another service request for that problem, because without opatch you're pretty lost in the higly unlikely case that you actually encounter one of the rare Oracle bugs.
