AMD x86-64 is simply a "super" set, supporting both
AMD extensions as well as generic (x86) 64 bit Intel.
i686 would have been something different, i586 would
also have been a possibility, i386 not (32 bits...).
Not into kernel hacking, but similar rules apply to Linux ISO downloads :)
