No Clue about Veritas but we are using a Virtual Tape Library. In the Beginning we had some Problems with reliability and speed. HP's Support took's 2 Month's until they find the bug - was a bad Drive
which wasn't dedected - they have Linux running in the "Background"

Until now (14 Month's) no Problems. But Speed is equal to our LTO3 so we use it mainly for slow running Backups, incrementals (Filesystem) and such.

Probably a Backup to Disk is more flexible, if your Backup Software support it.
