Ah. Now I get you. Even though I'd start the Oracle backup with RMAN at 23:30, when it comes to a restore, I'd simply recover it the way it was at 23:00. So, essentially, I'd "ignore" the "superflous" data of 23:01 until 23:30.

The idea is to backup "too much" and recover only what's needed.

That's what you're saying? If so, then this is a very good idea, indeed.
