My points here should only be read in the context of currently supported versions of Oracle. Obviously I'm not recommending RMAN for those poor souls who still have 7.3.4. <g>

Consider this:

The days when DBAs could be cowboys are over. As I stated here within the past week I am now aware of cases where DBAs have been dragged, under subpoena, into court to testify under oath and their emails and code used against them.

It is not a place where you want to be because you wrote some quick little shell script or took a shortcut. The employment histories of those who let their company's down are remarkably short.
