If you configure autobackup for your controlfile in RMAN and you are using an spfile, both we be automatically included in your backupset. Also, I would recommend using RMAN to backup and delete your archive logs so Oracle "knows" where they are. Otherwise RMAN will only be able to do so much for you and you limit its functionality.
