Thanks to both of you for helping me resolve the optimizer issue. This
is actually part of a larger problem that I was troubleshooting and I
ended up here. From what I learnt here, the key is the trace file.
That will help me  understand in what order Oracle is using the tables
and joins. I am sure I will be back with more questions.
