I have 3 machines in my small kingdom: a Windoze laptop, a
sendmail/spamassassin/fetchmail/dovecot server, a 400 MHZ AMD K6 with
196MB RAM and my desktop/oracle server which also hosts some other
programs for playing music and movies, some games and quickly improving
office software. What I need for home is something that is a fast
developing platform, able to keep up with new versions for gPHPedit,
AbiWord, OpenOffice, Bluefish, MPlayer, Unreal Tournament (legal version)
and things like that. I am also downloading and testing each new version
of PHP and Apache and testing them up. All platforms mentioned here are,
essentially, production platforms, with little or no attention paying to
the new bells & whistles like the ones needed by gPHPedit and MPlayer.
That makes them unsuitable for my home platform.
The problem with FC6 are network setup programs: /etc/hosts file looked
something like this:
::1
EOF
I have no clue what was that supposed to be, but I corrected it manually
and it started to work. I figured it out by using strace. sqlplus was
trying to connect to 127.0.0.1 and couldn't find it. That has provided
some clue about the nature of the problem. Now, I can upgrade my home
system.
