I think it should be just "backup recovery area" and related options to get it backed up. Once you get to 10.2 I think oracle has some command level ways to manipulate ASM based files.
The RMAN documentation should have an area and set of topics on the recovery area and maintenance thereof. Robert Freeman also has a new version of his RMAN book that should be out by now, it may be worth looking at.
