Changing recovery_parallelism parameter for Oracle 8i+

I have a multiprocessor system and like to use the parallelism feature from oracle running on solaris 8 current version of Oracle is 8i

as i tried to ochange the parameter using:

alter system set recovery_parallelism=<CPUNUMBER> scope=both sid=<mysid>;

logged in as sysdba on sqlplus

i got an error which told me that this is not possible for this parameter.

WHY? thank you for your fast help
