Okay, so then if not all columns are selected in the MV, the refresh process may not have immediate access to the PK columns, so they need to be explicitly stated... makes sense.

Yup, okay - my initial tests making it without including the values seems to have worked fine. So I guess the requirements differ depending on whether or not the mv contains all columns of the master table.
