Is the database only on the server's internal drives?

I ask this because I see this question quite often but rarely, these days, do I see people without a NetApp, EMC, or other disk array which is actually holding the database files.

If all you want is a new instance, on the new server, cloning the database is a waste of time and effort. Any instance can connect to any database.
