Thanks for the info guys. That was the track we were pursuing. But I found out from our DBA this morning that they found a faulty bit of hardware in the connection to the network storage. (sorry, I didn't get the exact detail of what the part was).
So things are much better today. Thanks again for the help.

(of course just as I wrote that a group of emails came in with Oracle
errors. But these aren't connection related. Time to get back to work!)
