Thank you very much for your responses to my question. It seems that I am not clear of what I was trying to say or maybe something else. For the sake of learning purposes, let me try again:

Our database's control files, redo logs, data files are all in NFS mounted file system. We want to create a standby server for this database ( I said 'standby server'). When primary server is crashed for any reason ( OS issues ....) we will mount all database's filesystems to standby server and startup database. Do I make myself clear now? We know that both servers should have the same level of O/S and Oracle version. I just want to see if anyone has ever setup the standby server with different OS version so I can learn something. I appreciate any constructive input, but not much for anything else....
