DLT tape drive has to be properly introduced to RMAN. Veritas NetBackup or OmniBackup will take care of the formalities. For the details of the etiquette on the RMAN court see the collected works of Rob Freeman who described the intricacies in his book called Oracle9i RMAN Backup & Recovery. I am eagerly expecting "Oracle 10g RMAN Backup and Recovery".
