Nice answer and well written. Some of us are fortunate to have a lot of experience with the different products (varies). So it depends. FGB's approach has a lot to recommend.

Others may try something like this:

Step 1: ask tom or google around a little (maybe if it's just something we have mis-placed mentally).

Step 2: Metalink (oracle support) maybe next on a keyword or two.

Step 3: Check the docs next to see if what the docs say contrast from step 1 and 2 above.

Step 4: Maybe an online forum or newsgroup (maybe).

Sprinkle with common sense ... but Step 3 the docs or good books has to be step 1 until you have paid your dues.
