As per other replies to your post, yes it is possible and no it isn't really necessary to use VMWare to run totally independent multiple Oracle instances on a single box. However, a couple of tips from experience if you do decide that you want to go down the VMWare path:

Run the host O/S as Linux. Found that a Win2000 virtual machine on a Linux host often works much better than a Win2000 virtual machine on a Win2000 host, let alone issues with a Linux virtual machine on a Win2000 host.

Be aware that Workstation and GSX Server version of VMWare can only allocate a single CPU (regardless of the CPU config of the hardware) to any one virtual machine (there can be RAM allocation issues as well). If you want to have virtual machines that can run in multiprocessor mode you will need to go to the top-of-line ESX Server version of VMWare.
