IIRC they didn't actually 'save' the $1Bn in real cash, but by comparing Cost of sales % pre the change with a lower cost of sales % post the change and then saying 'well if we'd had the old percentages we'd have spent $1bn more than we actually did'. It was a real achievement - the $1bn has always seemed to be smoke and mirrors to me.
