Then it isn't a small system. With a recovery catalog, you have to have a second database. If you have one anyways for OEM or whatever, not a problem, but if you don't, it's potentially twice as much work (well, not really, but you should know what I mean), and certainly requires separate resources. Of course, without a catalog you have to have some mechanism to be sure you don't lose RMAN information since it's not all in a backup controlfile to trace, which just means periodically doing a "list backup."
I've just gone through this with a customer. They agree a catalog is a good thing, will do it in a few months, just have more "important" things to have me do just now. I'm happy to have convinced them not to rely solely on exp! Can't say as I'm entirely happy with the 8i RMAN standby db syncronization mechanics.
