I think this is the real point! At the end of the day, you can never win with Oracle. What you gain on the one hand (by switching off redo writing) you lose on the other (by having -if you've got any sense!- to do extra backups... or, if the worst comes to the worst, having to restore a database from backup and repeat the entire bulk job).

I've used _disable_logging to speed up a regular weekend bulk load, but only because a closed whole database backup was taken on the Friday night anyway.

Like everything else, it's there to be used when occasion demands it, but never expect it to be "free".
