If the original database is a productional then installing second one on the same server is definitely not a wise move. However If you want, you need to:

  1. install second Oracle server software using DIFFERENT ORACLE_HOME, you would get prompt for new home just after instalation start.
  2. install what you want from 8.1.7
  3. while using ORACLE_HOME from new 8.1.7 , create new database as usual. Nothing different here from installing second instance using same Oracle Server version.
  4. edit accordingly your NET8 configuration files.
  5. Hey, you've finished.

It is very easy, isn't it? You can do the same with client machines, if you want also to test different client versions.

Note: pagesflames_at_usa.net has been cancelled due to changes (maybe we
can call it an overture to bankruptcy) on that server. I'm still using
this email to prevent SPAM. Maybe one day I will change it and have a
proper mail even for news, but right now I can be reached by this
email.
