Well, this list (and plenty of others no doubt) just reflects the same mix of people you find in life. You find people who are always helpful and are polite even if they are telling you where you are going wrong or have said or done something which doesn't align with their particular view of the world. And then you find people who just get a kick out of demonstrating how "superior" they are or putting down those who happen to have less knowledge or experience in their particular area of expertise. There are several of the latter who contribute regularly to this group and there are lots of the former.
I too have received the "Read the manual" reply in the past (I'll leave you to guess who from!). Surely the whole point of a newsgroup such as this is that you can tap other people's resource of knowledge (and hopefully put some input back in, in time), rather than possibly spend hours looking through a manual? It's a bit like having a "virtual ultra-experienced DBA" sitting opposite you isn't it? And if you ask a daft or really simple question and no-one answers it, then so be it. Better that than this stupid, bandwidth-wasting sarcasm which a few people seem to take great delight in.
Obviously it is in everyone's interest to take a while to search the newsgroup archives and online manuals to avoid asking questions which have been asked before. But if a "time-wasting" question does come up then either ignore it or answer politely. You wouldn't (hopefully) be rude to someone if they asked a question to your face, so don't do it here either.
