The point I made about "tricks" was that newer versions are more stable, and therefore the tricks are more likely to work.

The specific feature I was thinking of in 8.1.something (possibly as early as 8.1.5 but perhaps 8.1.7) is the

    index range scan (min/max)
which would automatically minimise
the task of find the earliest date if the table were suitably indexed.
