Aside from the normal questions about the cronjob, have you checked your security?
We hava a server (on MSW2k) out at a customer's, which every now and then hits max processes, but doesn't come back down, so the customer re-boots. We've been looking at tuning, and looking for possible bugs in our app, but now we are also looking at the possibility of DOS attacks:
