Dear Mr. Rogers,
Thanks for your response.
Some information were missing in my post, I agree.
Our production servers are located in a Data Center. After the migration to the "Server Farm", some especific Oracle applications suffered from a inaceptable response time.
These aplications are typically Oracle Developer (Forms/Report) that
resides on the client or in the client network, has some interation,
perform large processing and use the Databases on the Data Center.
Other applications suffered too (eg. VB with remote Oracle on the Data
Center), but are small applications and more easilly ajustable. Still,
others Database applications
(eg. SAP that has only presentation on the client) donīt show relevant
(and perceivable) performance problems.
The developers, the DBA and a consultant are examining the querys and applications arquitecture. For the emergency, we has installed PC Anywhere and VNC (and are testinG W2000 Terminal Services)to users execute critical applications on a remote Windows machine in the Data Center.
The purpose of the Multi-Plataform backup experience is to use Linux systems to store backups of small Oracle databases (up to 10 GB) for reporting and crash recovery (accordingly with your correct guess).
For a while, will be only a cheap (in teory) concept demo and (if OK) a alternative database for reports. In the worst case, we will at least have an adittional repository for the precious archiveds logs.
For larger Databases (greater than 30 GB) others solutions are required.
As soon as we receive a solicited PC Hardware (possibly next week), I will install Linux, Oracle and will also perform the suggested test (and of course return the results to this thread).
Thanks once more.
Kind regards,
