Hi,
don't have to ask. Java, awt, swing, eventually travels down to the
os graphical system. On Solaris/unix, this would X/Motif, on a
Microsoft platform, this would be Windows libraries. (haven't seen it
access any open GL...hmmm)
Anyway, my comment was to point out that java is not used to only write gui applications, it is much more.
Lots of people still have the opinion that java is slow. In some cases it can be, but these days it's giving comparable results to the the C world. Again, it all depends on what you are doing.
When you see the Oracle installer, I believe it written with jdk1.1.x, not the lastest version. This means that it is currently using an older virtual machine (vm). Each major rev of the jdk and vm's have brought a significant improvement in speed. The current jdk1.3 vesion is a leap up in speed over 1.2 which was a leap up from 1.1.x.
Now, keep in mind all you java bashers ;-), that java is 5 years old. It allows you to accomplish some pretty amazing things. What did you accomplish when you were 5? (And no, I'm not interested in starting a flame war, that is a rhetorical question...). I have seen Oracle's installers, and I'm not impressed. Given time, that too will change though and in this world of web time, it will occur sooner rather than later. Complaining to Oracle can't hurt either ;-)
cheers,
cindy
