I used the install guide at jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/rh61_815, which seemed to sort out all my problems.

One issue which isn't mentioned there - If your machine doesn't have rafts of RAM (say only 64Mb), you can edit the "jre" command in the runIns.sh script to use less memory (ie: reduce all the values in the "-ss4m -oss4m -ms32m -mx64m" part) ... this has been known to work ...
